Oh My Orchid Sky

“People where you live… grow five thousand roses in one garden… yet they don’t find what they’re looking for… and yet what they are looking for could be found in a single rose, or a little water… But eyes are blind. You have to look with the heart.” –Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. One of my favorite books as a child was The Little Prince , and I have to thank my 7th Grade teacher, Mrs. Estin, for exposing us to this inspiring piece of literature. As I ponder and wonder and stare at this orchid that was given to all of the actors who performed in The Vagina Monologues a few weeks ago, I am reminded of the Little Prince and his rose. His rose was unique to him; she looked different than all the other roses because he loved her.

It’s funny. I’m barely a week into this daily creative blog, and already I am seeing things differently, paying attention to the shades of yellow, the slit in the sides of the petal, the curves and folds and vibrant, waiting, bursting bulb. I have looked at this orchid longer than I have ever looked at a flower. Maybe I have blog brain (a preoccupation with trying to figure out my next blog post before the day’s end) or maybe I’m wearing bloggles (seeing everything as a potential blog theme). Or maybe doing something creative every day is having an effect on me, changing me in a good way. Maybe this is what it feels like to look with the heart.
